About the Play
"Texting Through Grief" is a poignant new work developed by Vermont Public Theater in collaboration with Arlington Common. The play explores the story of two friends, living in different time zones, who each lose their beloved husbands within months of each other. A single text from James to Mary sparks an ongoing conversation as they navigate the transformative process of grief together.
Creators and Performers
Mary Bacon
Drama Desk Award-winning actress and writer
Mary Bacon, who has a second home in Arlington, is a celebrated actress known for her work in Broadway and off-Broadway productions. Recently seen as Patti in "Coal Country" at NYC’s Public Theater, Bacon has collaborated with numerous renowned directors and playwrights. She co-founded the Women Artists Writing group and lost her husband, Andrew Leynse, in January 2023.
James Still
Renowned playwright
James Still’s plays have been performed across the globe and developed at prestigious institutions such as Sundance and the O’Neill Conference. His notable works include "Everybody’s Favorite Mothers" and a trilogy of plays: "The House That Jack Built," "Appoggiatura," and "Miranda." Still is a four-time Pulitzer nominee and a five-time Emmy nominee.
Gisela Gamper
Accomplished photographer and video artist
Gisela Gamper’s work in photography and experimental video has been recognized since 1971. She has collaborated on various projects with her late husband, musician David Gamper. Her recent works include the video installation "Hear, There, Everywhere," currently on view as part of Harvestworks/Governors Island summer programming.

Community Engagement
Vermont Public Theater and Arlington Common aim to foster community dialogue about collective and individual experiences of grief. This multi-media event, featuring photographic projection design by Gisela Gamper, offers an opportunity for attendees to share their own stories and engage with the creators as the play continues to develop.
